The Region

The Atacama Desert:
The Atacama is the driest desert on Earth. Some places here have not seen rain for millions of years.
The roughly 1.000km/621mi long and 200km/124mi wide desert in the very north of Chile is nestled between the Andes Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean.
No other place on Earth so closely resembles conditions on Mars. This is why the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA tests their extraterrestrial vehicles here. In short: Traveling in the Atacama Desert is
as close as most of us will ever get to experiencing the sensation of visiting another planet.
Yet, high above the desert on the Altiplano, in fertile oases, and in green valleys along few rivers, we experience the desert coming alive. It is this fascinating contrast that makes us keenly aware of how precious life is.

The Andean Altiplano:
The Andes span roughly 7.000km/4,350mi in north-south direction and are the longest mountain range on Earth. The area we will visit is where the Andes are at their widest, roughly 700km/435mi wide. This is the Andean Altiplano, the second largest high plain on Earth, after Tibet. It is located mostly in the western part of Bolivia and extends into Chile, Peru and Argentina.
The Altiplano is characterised by stratovolcanoes with some reaching up to 7.000m/23,000ft. Llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, Andean flamingos, Andean condors, rare canastero-birds and many more can be observed here.Atacama Uyuni ToadBikeTour

Atacama Uyuni Road Bike Expedition 3T Exploro

The Bike:

For cyclists, included in the price is a 3T Exploro Team rental bike. This adventure bike is perfect for riding on asphalt as well as gravel roads.
The bike is equipped with Shimano Ultegra Di2 (RX) and hydraulic disc brakes. Gearing will be 50/34 with a choice of 11-30 or 11-34T.
For each bike we will bring two sets of wheels. One 700c wheel-set with 28mm road tires (Continental Grand Prix GT or equivalent) and one 650b wheel-set with 54mm gravel tires.
These wheels and tire options allow us to ride on any road surface and quickly change the bikes from asphalt to a gravel set-up. Changing the wheels takes about two minutes and most importantly, does not change the rider’s position on the bike or the riding characteristics. This is unique and makes all the difference for this kind of bike tour!

Atacama Uyuni Expedition

Activities for Explorers:

Explorers (non-cycling travel companions) will enjoy an independent and customised program with their own vehicle and guide. We offer diverse options for explorers including visiting geological and archeological sites, natural parks, local craft shops, and other unique sights along the way. Hiking options exploring the flora and fauna of the region are also offered.
As the group of explorers is small—participation is limited to between 2 and 5 explorers—we will design the final program specifically with your personal interests in mind. As an explorer, you will receive a survey about possible activities before the tour. In addition, we suggest to meet you via video-conference before the tour to further understand your interests and needs.
