Road Bike Expeditions – Our Service

The tours Elements of the Universe and Passages of Evolution include the following services:

Hotel:
13 nights in a double room in usually small family-run hotels with between 3 and 4 stars. Because distances between towns can be very large in this part of the world, we will be staying at more simple accomodations at times. This allows us to visit spectacular places that we would otherwise miss.

Meals:
13 dinners and 13 breakfasts are included. Most meals will be at the hotel, some will be at restaurants. Lunch is not included. On days where a suitable lunch stop can not be arranged, participants will be given the option to preorder lunch packages (not included). The needs of cyclists will be accounted for. If you have any special dietary requirement, please let us know well in advance and we can accommodate for your needs.

Luggage tranport:
Your luggage will be transported by us. Per person please ano more than two large travel bags and one day pack.

Staff:
Depending on the number of participants, the support team will consist of up to 6 people: Fangye and Dirk of Canigou Cycling. One experienced staff who has accompanied Canigou Cycling tours in the past. Two Chilean, English speaking guides, one being an expert in astronomy and the other being an expert in geology, both preferably being PhD students at a Chilean university. Furthermore, at least one Chilean bus driver will join the tour.

Support Vehicles:
We will have four support vehicles: One large, luxurious long-distance bus with enough seats for all participants (cyclists and explorers). A cycling support car following the cyclists primarily used for mechanical support. A van/mini-bus dedicated to taking the explorers on their independent excursions. A media and management car to take photos and drone footage and make sure everything runs smoothly.

Airport Transfer:
Für die Elements of the Universe Tour ist ein Transfer in Arica (ARI) sowie in Iquique (IQQ) inklusive.
Für die Passages of Evolution Tour ist ein Transfer in Ushuaia (USH) sowie in El Calafate (FTE) inklusive.

Service for Cyclists

Rental Bike:
For cyclists, included in the price is a 3T Exploro Team rental bike.
The bike is equipped with Shimano Ultegra Di2 (RX) and hydraulic disc brakes. Gearing will be 50/34 with a choice of 11-30 or 11-34T. Two sets of wheels (700c and 650b) are included for each bike.

Navigation, Geopositioning und Bike Accessories:
For each stage you will receive a route card with a map, an altitude profile, information about road surfaces and the designated support stations along the way. GPS tracks are preprogrammed into the included rental GPS units.

All cyclists will receive a small and light geo-locator based on satellite technology. With this, we can track everyone's location in close to real time. Additionally, this device can be used to initiate a distress-signal in case of an emergency.

All bikes will be equipped with two bottle cages and high-visibility daytime running lights for front and rear.

Support Vehicles:
The scale of nature in this area of the world is huge and distances between the sparse towns are large. Therefore only few stages will start and/or end directly at the hotels. On most days, cyclists will be shuttled by bus to the starting point of a day's stage. On many days, the stage will end at a predetermined location where the bus is awaiting the cyclists to shuttle them to the hotel. To make the transition from bike to bus as comfortable as possible, portable changing cabins and mobile showers will be set up at the transition locations.
We have two support cars for cyclists on the road and service stations will be set up at predetermined locations. You will have access to snacks, liquid and your daypacks. If need be, you may always join one of the support cars—there is enough space for everyone.
Cyclists also have the possibility to opt out of cycling stages and instead join the explorer group for the day, permitting enough space in the explorer’s van (please announce at least two days ahead—space is limited).

Service for Explorer

Explorers will enjoy an independent and customised program with their own vehicle and guide. We offer diverse options for explorers including visiting geological and archeological sites, natural parks, local craft shops, and other unique sights along the way. Hiking options exploring the flora and fauna of the region are also offered.
As the group of explorers is small—participation is limited to between 2 and 5 explorers—we will design the final program specifically with your personal interests in mind. As an explorer, you will receive a survey about possible activities before the tour. In addition, we suggest to meet you via video-conference before the tour to further understand your interests and needs.

Joint Program for Explorers & Cyclists

There will be joint activities for explorers and cyclists most days. Usually we will start and end the day together with a joint meal.
At the hotels we will have daily briefings as well as occasional presentations on geography and astronomy for everyone to join. When possible, cyclists and explorers will meet at the highlight site of the day.
On the three non-cycling days, cyclists will join the explorer’s program. On the two days half of the day will be free of activities for all participants.

Daily briefings and Presentations

Daily Briefings: On most evenings we will have a 30 minute briefing with announcements as well as a preview of the route and activities for the following day. Every few days we will show a slide show with the best pictures of recent days.

Presentations: Every second evening we will have a 45 - 60 minute presentation given by one of our two expert guides on either geology or astronomy. The presentations will give background information on the sites and phenomena we encounter during our tour. No previous knowledge of geology or astronomy is required. Additionally, at the beginning of the tour, Dirk of Canigou Cycling will give an introductory overview of Big History, how the Universe was created and how humans have evolved since.

Secular Meditation: Optional. Everyone is welcome to join us for 20 minutes of morning meditation before breakfast. We practice non-religious meditation focused on mindfulness. We simply sit and follow our breath—a conscious way to start a perfect day.
